F. S. Publication 114

AIR MINISTRY, London, 1919

A very rare original RAF Lewis Machine Gun handbook, published in April 1919. The book originally belonged to a Royal Air Force Pilot pilot, Flying Officer J. H. Leach. It is Signed and dated in ink on the front cover by ‘J. H. Leach, 21/9/25’.

Produced just after the end of the First World War, Handbook on the Lewis Gun is a practical guide to the handling and maintenance of the aircraft variants of the Lewis Gun as used by the R.F.C., R.N.A.S., and R.A.F. during WW1 and in the inter-war period. Full of fascinating information and very well illustrated with photographic plates, this book will tell you all you need to know about the workings, mechanism, use and maintenance of the .303 Lewis Gun. The book includes a pasted-in amendment sheet detailing the introduction of special 'Red label' RAF ammunition for the Lewis Gun.

F/O Joseph Harold Leach (1902-1977): was a Royal Air Force pilot between the wars. He was granted a Short Service Commission as a Pilot Officer on 21st September 1925, the exact day he signed the cover of this book. In September 1930 he was transferred to the reserve, and in 1935 he relinquished his commission 'on completion of service'. He returned to the Royal Air Force in March 1939, as a Flying Officer. In the 1939 England and Wales Register, he is listed as a 'Civilian Adjutant, RAF'. (I will include copies of the details I have of F/O Leach's RAF career with the book).

In very good condition. The cover has minor signs of wear and use, a few marks, and two ring binder holes carefully punched near the spine. The binding is good and secure. The text, plates and illustrations are in very good condition with a few minor marks. Signed and dated in ink on the front cover by ‘J. H. Leach, 21/9/25’.
