The AMES acronym became the basis for naming RAF radar systems throughout the war. It was a restricted document, marked 'Not To Be Published', and intended for the use of the Infantry, Royal Armoured Corps, Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers, Military Intelligence and various training and O.C.T.U. units. The manual is a comprehensive and very useful guide to all aspects of aerial photographic interpretation, covering the various types of aerial photographs, the interpretation of RAF reconnaissance photographs, the equipment used to interpret images, the identification of enemy vehicles, strongpoints, fortifications, weapons, and battlefield deployment. The manual is very well illustrated with diagrams and numerous photographic plates, including photographs of enemy positions, industrial areas, vehicles, shipping, weapons, bombing damage, ant-aircraft batteries, airfields, invasion barges and even the concentration camp at Dachau.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCondition:\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn very good condition. This book was specifically intended for the use of Allied Air Gunners, and was concerned with how to deal with attacks by enemy fighters. It would have been very useful for all front, mid-upper and rear gunners in understanding the best way to counteract fighter attacks. The manual covers the theory and practice of making sure the bomber’s defensive fire would hit the mark, looking at various methods of allowing for deflection and the relative closing speeds of both aircraft. All the various attacks are dealt with: head on, side, rear, above and below. Very well illustrated and clearly written, this would have been an essential bit of kit for all Allied Air Gunners. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe book comes with an original poem, written in pencil on the notes pages at the rear. Oaks underwent training at the Air Gunners and Observers School, Ohakea, New Zealand, and was awarded his observer badge and promoted to Sergeant on 28th May. He sailed for the UK on 7th June in the RMS Rangitata. In July 1940 Oaks was posted to 17 OTU Upwood and after converting to Blenheims joined 106 Squadron at Finningley on 3rd October. He went on to serve with 235 Squadron at Bircham Newton, 69 Squadron in Malta in 1941 for general reconnaissance duties over the Mediterranean, 294 Squadron in 1943 on ASR duties, and later that year with 76 OTU Aquir, Palestine, as an instructor. Medmenham’\u003c\/strong\u003e. This handbook would have been very useful for the R.A.F. reconnaissance pilots carrying out specialist missions for the Medmenham photographic inteeligence unit.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRAF Medmanham\u003c\/strong\u003e: was a Royal Air Force station based at Danesfield House near Medmenham, in Buckinghamshire. It specialized in photographic intelligence, and it was the home of the RAF Intelligence Branch. During the Second World War, RAF Medmenham was the main interpretation centre for photographic reconnaissance operations in the European and Mediterranean theatres. Specially adapted unarmed Spitfires, with a maximum speed of 396 mph at 30,000 feet, were used for these photo-reconnaissance missions. The aircraft were fitted with five cameras which were heated to ensure good results. Of particular significance in the success of the work of Medmenham was the use of stereoscopic images. Major operations made possible by the work at Medmanham included the attack on the V-2 rocket development plant at Peenemünde in August 1943. Later raids were also carried out against potential launch sites at Wizernes and 96 other launch sites in Northern France. Medmanham's greatest operational success came in December 1943, when \"Operation Crossbow” destroyed the V-1 infrastructure in Northern France.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCondition:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn good condition. Divided into alphabetically arranged sections, the entries include operational numbers, locations, target names, areas, and Air Ministry codes for every target. Targets covered include oil refineries, power stations, dams, chemical works, munitions and explosives factories, naval armaments, naval bases, army bases, airfields, aircraft factories, mines, steel works, railways, and everything else that could be relevant to the German war effort. (For some unknown reason the introductory page has the word 'German' crossed out in pencil and replaced with 'Italy', but all the information in the manual relates solely to German targets, with no further mentions of Italy anywhere in the text).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA distribution list at the front of the manual shows that it had a very restricted circulation, with a maximum of only 300 copies being produced. (this is copy number 18). These would presumably have been distributed to the Air Ministry, General Staff, and all Bomber Command stations engaged in the air offensive against Germany. After attending the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he was commissioned on 1 February 1941 into the 2nd Derbyshire Yeomanry at Ripon. He was posted to the Middle East in July 1941 and transferred to the Nottinghamshire (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry. Posted initially at Cairo and Palestine, he found himself stuck at headquarters twenty miles behind El Alamein as a camouflage officer as the Second Battle of El Alamein began. At dawn on 24 October 1942, the Regiment advanced, and suffered numerous casualties from enemy anti-tank guns. Chafing at inactivity, Douglas took off against orders on 27 October, drove to the Regimental HQ in a truck, and reported to the C.O., Colonel E. O. Kellett, lying that he had been instructed to go to the front (luckily this escapade did not land him in serious trouble; Douglas got off with an apology). The nearby satellite airfield of Darley Moor was ready for operational use in September. The construction was part of the rush to build national defence facilities in the aftermath of German victory in theBattle for France. The Ashbourne site was less than ideal - at over 600 feet above sea level the airfield was above the usual ceiling for the construction of airfields. In addition, even after construction, the airfield was less than flat, being dominated by a natural hump running across the airstrip. The result was that even before the base opened it was deemed unsuitable for heavy bomber operations. It would be relegated during the war to training duties as a base for 81 Operational Training Unit (OTU) during the first months after opening in 1942, and for 42 Operational Training Unit (OTU) from 1942 to 1945. Three types of aircraft flew out of Ashbourne: the Bristol Blenheim, the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley and the Armstrong Whitworth Albermarle. Operational Training revolved around Army-Air liaison (which included the dropping of supplies and parachutists and glider towing). During WW2 the role of M.I.3. was changed to military intelligence in Europe, including the Baltic states, USSR and Scandinavia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Basic Handbooks:\u003c\/strong\u003e This series of handbooks covered enemy and occupied countries and was compiled by British Intelligence services, S.O.E., and the M.E.W. from April 1943 onwards, at the request of the Joint Intelligence Committee. Classified as secret, this comprehensive collection of numerous highly detailed volumes was intended to reflect official British understanding and thinking, rather than being an exercise in propaganda. This included an indication of the state of contemporary knowledge of the persecution of Jewish people, concentration camps, the extent of collaboration and resistance in occupied countries, and other aspects of Nazi programmes, administration, organisations, and methods. Countries and regions were also provided with geographical, historical and political introductions, often covering the period from antiquity to recent 20th century politics. Discussions of recent events such as the Anschluss were more sophisticated than anything which would have been publicly permissible during the war. M.E.W.’s links with SOE are also highlighted in the anecdotal nature of some of the information, which would have been based on agents’ reports, intercepts, and captured documents. The Zone Handbooks and their map supplements are in very good condition.
