A Georgian mahogany cased compass, made c.1820-1840. This type of wood cased compass was produced from around the end of the 18th century to the mid-19th century. This example has a typically ornate Georgian style of compass card design. It also has the  distinctive, delicate and finely balanced blued compass needle. The hand-made triangular hinges also point to it being a Georgian rather than Victorian compass. The compass is in good working order and finds North well. With a paper compass card, flat blued needle, and brass 'crown' pivot. The automatic transit lock, operated by a small pin and lever when the lid is closed, is present and working well.

Condition:

In good condition, and full working order. The compass finds North well. The wooden case is in good condition, with a small indentation at one corner of the lid. The original glass is in very good condition. There is some surface corrosion to the needle.
