Pocket Map Measuring Set c.1905

Price $124.00 Sale

A Pocket Map Measuring Compendium, including a miniature compass, map measurer, and magnifying glass. The miniature compass is marked 'Made in France', and the board insert into which the three instruments are fitted is marked 'England'. During wartime the small compass may also have been intended for use as an escape compass. Complete with the original blue leather case with press-stud closure. Dating from the WW1 era, this set would probably have been an officer's private purchase item, and a very useful addition to the standard items of a junior officer's kit.

This compendium, along with a Verner's compass, barometer, and optical square, was part of a set of navigation instruments owned by Captain P. F. M. Michelli, a regular army officer, who served with the Royal Engineers during WW1. The Verner's compass was inscribed 'P. F. M. Michelli, Eton College, 1905'.

Condition

The three instruments are in good condition, and full working order, with some marks and general signs of use. The leather case is in good condition.
