In half leather binding, each volume has marbled boards, marbled page edges, and marbled endpapers, The edition details are: Volume I: 2nd edition, 1863; Volume II: 2nd edition, 1863; Volume III: 1st edition, 1868; Volume IV: 3rd edition, 1875; Volume V: 1st edition, 1875; Volume VI: 1st edition, 1880. \u003cem\u003eThe Invasion of the Crimea\u003c\/em\u003e was published in eight volumes, beginning in 1863 and finally being completed in 1887.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKinglake was in the Crimea in 1854, witnessing many significant actions and battles, including the battle of the Alma, the siege of Sebastopol, and the charge of the Light Brigade on 25 October near Balaklava. His description of the death of Captain Nolan during the charge is extraordinary. Nolan was hit in the chest by a shell fragment, ‘Then from what had been Nolan - and his form was still erect in the saddle, his sword arm still high in the air - there burst forth a cry so strange and appalling that the hearer who rode nearest to him has always called it “unearthly”. And in truth, I imagine, the sound resulted from no human will, but rather from those spasmodic forces which may act upon the bodily frame when life, as a power, has ceased’. Kinglake was entrusted with the task of writing a history of the campaign by Lord Raglan's widow, who had sent him all the papers in her possession. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAlexander William Kinglake (1809-1891) \u003c\/strong\u003ewas an English travel writer and historian. Born near Taunton, Somerset and educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, he was called to the Bar in 1837. His first literary venture was \u003cem\u003eEothen; or Traces of travel brought home from the East\u003c\/em\u003e, (J. Ollivier, London, 1844), a very popular account of his travels in the East, first published anonymously, in which Kinglake described a journey he made about ten years earlier in Syria, Palestine and Egypt, together with his Eton contemporary Lord Pollington. Elliot Warburton said it evoked \"the East itself in vital actual reality\" and it was instantly successful. Winston Churchill was an admirer of Kinglake's writing - he was once asked how he had learned to write so well. His reply consisted of just one word: 'Kinglake!’ Kinglake's magnum opus was undoubtedly \u003cem\u003eThe Invasion of the Crimea\u003c\/em\u003e, published in 8 volumes, from 1863 to 1887 by Blackwood. It took Kinglake most of his life to complete the work, which was based on his own experiences while attached to the Staff of Lord Raglan and his unique access to Raglan's personal papers. The papers were given to Kinglake by Raglan's widow, and when Kinglake himself died he left orders for all of Raglan's papers to be destroyed.
