FIELD GUNNERY
By DONALD A. MACALISTER
JOHN MURRAY, London, 1916
Field Gunnery is an original WW1 British Army artillery manual, published in March 1916, just before the Somme offensive, by John Murray. Although not part of Murray's 'Imperial Army Series', the book is identical in style and format to the books in that series which were edited by Captain E. J. Solano and published between 1914-1918.
Field Gunnery includes comprehensive details of the effective use of artillery in trench warfare. Covering everything that an artillery officer or battery commander would need to know when bringing his guns into action: from positioning and ranging the guns, to the creeping barrage and the different types of shrapnel shell and fuse that might be used. The book is very well illustrated throughout, with diagrams and line drawings. There are also some interesting advertisements for officers trench equipment, with details of popular brands of officer's kit, ear protection ('Fibrous Plasticine: an absolute necessity for the gunners'), and luminous military watches.
