H.M.S.O., 1905
printed by Harrison and Sons, London, May 1906
The extremely rare eighth edition of the official War Office ammunition handbook, published in 1905, and printed in May 1906. Treatise on Ammunition is a superbly illustrated handbook of the explosives, shells, fuzes, and small arms ammunition in use with the British Armed Forces just before the start of WW1. Subjects covered include: Cordite, Guncotton, Primers, Cartridges, High Explosive shells, Shrapnel Shells, Projectiles for B.L. guns, ammunition for Q.F. guns, Fuzes, Detonators, Rockets, Star shells, and Small Arms ammunition. The book is very well illustrated with 37 coloured plates of shells, cartridges, explosives, and fuzes, along with numerous other diagrams and line drawings of ammunition, explosive charges, and equipment. The description of the various types of ammunition is comprehensive and detailed, and includes details of markings, manufacture, storage and use. For anyone interested in the ammunition of the British Armed forces just before the First World War, this is an invaluable reference work and undoubtedly the best contemporary volume on pre-WW1 British ammunition.
