H. Riddell, a WW1 Sopwith Camel pilot in the Royal Naval Air Service and RAF. Leonard Riddell's flying career was featured in a special exhibition 'From Street to Trench' at The Imperial War Museum North in Salford in 2014-15. A life size replica of a Camel was displayed alongside a selection of items from the IWM's collection of artefacts belonging to Lieutenant Riddell. At the outbreak of WW1 Leonard Riddell was a 14 year old schoolboy living in Manchester. By the end of 1918, aged just 18, he was an experienced fighter pilot who had been shot down, wounded and was being held as a prisoner of war. A fascinating collection of his wartime diaries, photographs, letters and other items have been preserved by the IWM, many of which are available to view online. Leonard joined the R.N.A.S. in 1917 and by September of that year he had been promoted to Flight Sub-Lieutenant. In March 1918, five months after his first solo flight, he was flying a Sopwith F1 fighter with No.1 Squadron R.N.A.S. (later to become No. 201 Squadron) in France. His diary describes dogfights, bombing and highly dangerous low-level strafing missions. The entry for 2nd April 1918 highlighted the dangers of anti-aircraft fire: 'Got Archied very badly - heard the bursting shrapnel which indicates it is time to do a bit of dodging about. He had taken off at 8.30am in Camel D9652 on a line patrol near Bayonvillers. Hit by ant-aircraft machine gun fire, he was seen to crash behind enemy lines at 9.05am and was posted as missing. The RAF list of casualties on 8th August was far higher than on any other day during the war. And the day went particularly badly for 201 squadron: they lost seven Camels, with five pilots becoming POW's, one MIA and one killed. Wounded and with a badly broken leg, Leonard was one of those taken prisoner and remained in captivity for the rest of the war. On August 6th 1920, almost two years to the day after his crash, Leonard relinquished his commission in the RAF as a result of his wounds.

The Aviation Pocket-Book was produced for the use of R.F.C. and R.N.A.S pilots. Rifle Shooting was based on the author’s earlier work of 1895 and was intended as a practical manual for the use of Volunteer Corps battalions. This revised edition of 1900 was published because the newly-adopted Lee-Metford rifle had rendered the earlier manual obsolete. This edition includes a great deal of information on rifle ballistics, range shooting, the effects of various types of bullet, and a comparison of modern magazine fed and other service rifles, such as the Lee-Metford, Lee-Enfield and Martini-Henry. Even though by 1900 the magazine rifle was only just starting to dominate the battlefield, Tippins accurately predicted that the automatic rifle would soon take over: ‘The rifle of the near future will not be a simple magazine rifle, but an automatic rifle, reloading itself after each shot ready for the next.'

The book is signed on the front endpaper by ‘W. Soon afterwards, having suffered a "serious mental breakdown”, Middleton received a letter from the Admiralty, dated 15th December 1915, stating that he had been found unsuitable for the Air Service and terminating his appointment.

He then tried to get work as a journalist and wrote articles for the Daily Mail under the name "Air Pilot”, and it was in this capacity that an unfortunate incident occurred which led to him being arrested and tried under the Defence of the Realm Act. On 12th April 1916, Middleton visited Dover and met up with former colleagues in the RNAS, telling them, "I have come to Dover to do a bit of spying for Pemberton Billing”. Soon afterwards, he was arrested and appeared at Dover magistrates court on 20th April where, despite pleading not guilty, he was committed for trial charged with "unlawfully attempting to elicit information with respect to the movements or disposition of His Majesty's forces (to wit, the Royal Naval Air Service) such as might be of value to the enemy.” At his trial in Maidstone on 22nd June he pleaded guilty, and the Lord Chief Justice dealt leniently with him, on the basis that he was trying to work for the improvement of the Air Service, had no evil motive and was loyal to his country. He was bound over in the sum of £25.

Middleton continued as a journalist, but also turned his hand to writing books, drawing upon his experiences in the Air Service to produce several volumes, including Aircraft (1916), The Way of the Air: A Description of Modern Aviation (1917), Glorious Exploits of the Air (1917), and the illustrated four volume set, The Great War in the Air (1920).

Middleton went on to have a very successful career as playwright. Noel was an expert marksman and weapons instructor and this book was produced during WW1. It includes everything an officer would need to know about handling his service revolver. Noel compares the various models of service revolver, such as the Webley .455, the Smith & Wesson and the Colt, and highlights the relative merits of the revolver over the Automatic pistol. Noel was sceptical about the automatic pistol in general, although he considered the Luger Parabellum to be a superb weapon. He thought the automatic's square handle to be a disadvantage when aiming, something that the Luger overcame with its more ergonomic angled grip. Covering a wide range of topics, from how to hit various types of moving targets and how to select your ideal weapon, to the mechanism of the revolver and the care and maintenance of weapons, this would have been an invaluable guide for any officer in the trenches of the western front. A professional soldier whose regiment spent summers near the Himalayas, Noel served in WW1 before joining the 1922 Everest expedition as its official photographer and filmmaker. In 1924 Noel joined George Mallory on his ill-fated Everest expedition. Noel himself reached the North Col and used a specially adapted camera to film the final summit attempt. A note from George Mallory to Noel was the last contact anyone had with Mallory before his body was discovered high on the mountain in 1999. His first experience of the polar regions was as third officer on Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery Expedition 1901–1904, from which he was sent home early on health grounds, after he and his companions Scott and Edward Adrian Wilson set a new southern record by marching to latitude 82°S. During his expedition of 1907–1909 Shackleton and three companions established a new record Farthest South latitude at 88°S, only 97 geographical miles from the South Pole. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active Antarctic volcano. For these achievements, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII on his return home. Shackleton next turned his attention to the crossing of Antarctica from sea to sea, via the pole. His 'Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition’ of 1914–17 went disastrously wrong when its ship, Endurance, became trapped in pack ice and was slowly crushed before the shore parties could be landed. The crew survived, firstly by camping on the sea ice until the ship disintegrated, then by launching the lifeboats to reach Elephant Island and ultimately the inhabited island of South Georgia, after an epic ocean voyage of 720 nautical miles which became Shackleton's most famous exploit. In 1921, he returned to the Antarctic with the Shackleton–Rowett Expedition, but died of a heart attack while his ship was moored in South Georgia. At his wife's request he was buried there. Sir Raymond Priestley, one of Shackleton’s trusted companions, provided the perfect epitaph: “For scientific discovery give me Scott; for speed and efficiency of travel give me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton."

Harold Begbie (1871–1929) was an English author and journalist who published nearly 50 books and poems and contributed to numerous newspapers and periodicals. He lived at 44 Trinity Square, Southwark all his life. His father, Dr Frederick Larkin had also lived there, and he too was a Surgeon. Frederick Larkin (1847-1927) had given crucial evidence in one of the most notorious Victorian murder trials, that of Henry Wainwright in 1875. The case became known as ‘The Whitechapel Tragedy', and Larkin performed the post-mortem examination of the victim, Harriet Lane. In November of the same year (1875) Larkin’s confident judgement and accurate evidence during the trial was largely responsible for Henry Wainwright's final conviction, winning handsome recognition from the Lord Chief Justice.

As a Police Surgeon with M Division of the Metropolitan Police, Reginald Larkin was involved in investigating numerous serious crimes, from the attempted murder of a policeman to serious assaults and gruesome domestic murders. An absolutely fascinating, and very readable record of his work has been preserved in the transcripts of trials held during the early 1900’s at the Old Bailey in London (www.oldbaileyonline.org). These accounts include the evidence Reginald Larkin gave in court, allowing us an invaluable insight into the forensic work of an Edwardian Police Surgeon. One particular case, Conrad Shelby's trial for murder, which took place in January 1912, includes Dr Larkin’s detailed testimony on the weapon used, the conclusions that could be reached from blood splatter patterns, and much other forensic information that would not seem out of place in a modern day courtroom. Another case, that of Charles Arthur from January 1911, concerned the attempted murder of a Policeman by a petty criminal armed with a revolver. While the officer, Constable Haytread, was giving chase, the assailant fired at him at least three times, missing each time, until he was tackled. In the ensuing struggle, Charles Arthur managed to hold the gun against Constable Haytread’s forehead and pulled the trigger. Incredibly, the gun failed to fire. The assailant was then overpowered and taken into custody. Dr Larkin’s main involvement in this case was to treat Haytread, who was clearly suffering from post-traumatic shock after this experience.

(I will include details of these trials and copies of other documents relating to Dr Larkin with the book. While engaged as one of the New York Herald's overseas correspondents in 1869, he was instructed by James Gordon Bennett Jr to find the celebrated Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone, who was presumed lost somewhere in Africa. Stanley travelled to Zanzibar in March 1871 and outfitted an expedition with the best of everything, requiring no fewer than 200 porters. This 700-mile expedition through the tropical forest soon became a nightmare. His thoroughbred stallion died within a few days after a bite from a Tsetse fly, many of his carriers deserted and the rest were decimated by tropical diseases. Stanley eventually found Livingstone on 10 November 1871, in Ujiji near Lake Tanganyika (in present-day Tanzania), and may have greeted him with the now famous, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" This famous phrase may be a fabrication, as Stanley later destroyed the pages of his diary relating to the encounter. Even Livingstone's account of the encounter fails to mention these words. However, a summary of Stanley's letters published by The New York Times on 2 July 1872, quotes the phrase.

The New York Herald account of the meeting, published on 2nd July 1872, also includes the phrase: "Preserving a calmness of exterior before the Arabs which was hard to simulate as he reached the group, Mr. Stanley said: 'Doctor Livingstone, I presume?' A smile lit up the features of the hale white man as he answered: 'Yes, that is my name' . . ."

Stanley proceeded to join Livingstone in further exploring the region, establishing that there was no connection between Lake Tanganyika and the River Nile. The 1st edition was published in November 1913. The "William" of the book's title is Kaiser Wilhelm II of the House of Hohenzollern. The book chronicles life in London under German occupation and the changes that come with a foreign army's invasion and triumph. Like Erskine Childers's novel The Riddle of the Sands (1903), it predicts the Great War (in which Saki would be killed) and is an example of invasion literature, a literary genre which flourished at the beginning of the 20th century as tensions between the European great powers increased. Much of the book is an argument for compulsory military service, about which there was then a major controversy. The scene in which an Imperial decree is announced in a subjugated London, excusing the unmilitary British from serving in the Kaiser's armies, is particularly bitter. There are also several vignettes exemplifying the differences between the English and the continental way of life. When William Came is now regarded as an important contribution to the literature of the First World War.

H. Influenced by Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll and Rudyard Kipling, he himself influenced A. A. Milne, Noël Coward and P. G. Wodehouse. Besides his short stories he wrote a full-length play, The Watched Pot, in collaboration with Charles Maude; two one-act plays; a historical study, The Rise of the Russian Empire, the only book published under his own name; a short novel, The Unbearable Bassington; the episodic The Westminster Alice (a parliamentary parody of Alice in Wonderland); and When William Came (1913), subtitled A Story of London Under the Hohenzollerns, a fantasy about a future German invasion and occupation of Britain. He had left Britain in June 1916, sailing from Liverpool in the SS City of Marseilles on his way to India with a number of other officer cadets. By the end of the war he was a Captain in the 28th Punjabis, having fought with the Mesopotamian and Egyptian Expeditionary Forces. He remained in the army after the war, and joined the Waziristan Field Force on the North West Frontier in 1921. There is a large collection of letters, photographs and other information held at the Imperial War Museum relating to Captain Boxall’s army service between 1916 and 1922. In 1923 Captain Boxall was commissioned as a Flying Officer in the Royal Air Force. By 1924 he was stationed at RAF Bircham Newton in Norfolk, flying Vickers Vimy bombers with No. 7 Squadron. In April of that year he was injured when the Vimy he was piloting crashed into a hangar door. In 1925 he was elected to be a member of the Royal Aero Club. What happened next is a bit of a mystery, but in June 1928 an anouncement apeared in Flight magazine, stating that ‘Flying Officer M. W. J. Boxall is dismissed the service by sentence of General Court Martial (June 25th).’ The London Gazette published a similar notice 0n 31st August, stating that ‘Capt. Maurice William James Boxall, I.A. (ret’d), is removed from the Indian Army, on conviction by a General Court martial while serving with the Royal Air Force. Dated 25th June 1928.’ I have been unable to uncover any details about Captain Boxall’s court martial, but it must have involved a serious offence of some sort. If he was still with 7 Squadron at the time, his commanding officer would have been Wing Commander Charles Portal (later Air Marshall, Viscount Portal of Hungerford). I have found only two other references to Captain Boxall after the court martial. The first is on a list of passengers leaving Southampton bound for Quebec in Canada in August 1928. The second is a reference to his death, in June 1940, in Devon. Further research is needed to discover exactly how Captain Boxall’s RAF career came to such a sad end. (I will include copies of the details I have of Captain Boxall’s army and RAF career with the book).

R.A.F. Flying Training Manual Part II was first produced just after the First World War. It draws very heavily on the combat experience of the R.F.C and R.A.F. during WW1, and the tactics described and the planes depicted in the illustrations would have been familiar to any WW1 pilot. This book concentrates on the theory and practice of aerial combat, from individual dogfighting, to attacks on two-seaters, Kite Balloons and Airships. With sections on bombing, ground attack, gunnery, strafing and night fighting it is a detailed and fascinating insight into all aspects of aerial warfare as it was taught to R.A.F pilots and aircrew just after the First World War. The 'chivalry' of the aerial fighting of 1914 was very much a distant memory by then, as is clearly shown in the cold-blooded pragmatism of the section on attacking kite balloons:

'When destroying a balloon, every effort should be made to kill the observer; since trained personnel are more difficult to replace than material. Covering the strategy, tactics, equipment, and weapons of land, sea and air warfare. Bernhardi’s works were well received by Germany's rightist nationalists, but ironically, found their greatest popularity in England. At a time when British suspicion of German militarism led to a widespread fear of invasion, Bernhardi's assertive views were cited as proof of German ill intent towards England.

Friedrich Adolf Julius von Bernhardi (1849–1930) was a Prussian general and military historian. He was a best-selling author prior to World War I. A militarist, he is best known for his bellicose book Deutschland und der Nächste Krieg (Germany and the Next War), printed in 1911. He advocated a policy of ruthless aggression and complete disregard of treaties and regarded war as a 'divine business’. Bernhardi was born in St. Petersburg, and his family moved to Schöpstal, Silesia in 1851. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71), Bernhardi was a cavalry lieutenant in the 14th Hussars Regiment of the Prussian Army, and at the end of that conflict had the honor of being the first German to ride through the Arc de Triomphe when the Germans entered Paris. From 1891 to 1894, he was German military attaché at Bern and was subsequently head of the military history department of the Grand General Staff in Berlin. He was appointed general in command of the VII Army Corps at Münster in Westphalia in 1907, but retired two years later and became a military writer. In his 1911 book, Germany and the Next War, Bernhardi stated that war 'is a biological necessity,' and that it was in accordance with 'the natural law, upon which all the laws of Nature rest, the law of the struggle for existence.'

During WW1 Bernhardi returned to the army with the rank of General. He fought with success first on the Eastern Front on the Stochod, where he stormed the bridgehead of Tsarecze, and afterwards on the Western Front, in particular at Armentières. He was awarded the Pour le Mérite on 20th August 1916, for his participation in the German defense against the Brusilov Offensive.

Condition:

Both volumes are in good condition. It includes an original, handwritten poem, added to the blank notes pages by an RAF gunner. This book was specifically intended for the use of Allied Air Gunners, and was concerned with how to deal with attacks by enemy fighters. It would have been very useful for all front, mid-upper and rear gunners in understanding the best way to counteract fighter attacks. The manual covers the theory and practice of making sure the bomber’s defensive fire would hit the mark, looking at various methods of allowing for deflection and the relative closing speeds of both aircraft. It specialized in photographic intelligence, and it was the home of the RAF Intelligence Branch. During the Second World War, RAF Medmenham was the main interpretation centre for photographic reconnaissance operations in the European and Mediterranean theatres. Specially adapted unarmed Spitfires, with a maximum speed of 396 mph at 30,000 feet, were used for these photo-reconnaissance missions. The aircraft were fitted with five cameras which were heated to ensure good results. Of particular significance in the success of the work of Medmenham was the use of stereoscopic images. Major operations made possible by the work at Medmanham included the attack on the V-2 rocket development plant at Peenemünde in August 1943. Later raids were also carried out against potential launch sites at Wizernes and 96 other launch sites in Northern France. Medmanham's greatest operational success came in December 1943, when "Operation Crossbow” destroyed the V-1 infrastructure in Northern France.

Condition:

In good condition. As Henry Williamson noted in an appreciation written early in 1935, shortly after Yeates died, ‘His death passed entirely unoticed in the literary world; few had heard of his book. Yet it is one of the great books of our time’.

For anyone interested in the Royal Flying Corps and the life of a front line pilot in 1918, this is undoubtedly the finest account there is. Although written as a novel, it is in fact very much a day to day account of Yeates' own life on the western front. Yeates' biographer has conducted extensive research which has proved that almost every event described in the book actually happened. Some of the characters names have not even been changed, making it very easy to identify actual R.F.C. members who appear in the book — including George Edwin Thomsom (21 kills, called "Tommy" in the book), Harry Noel Cornforth Robinson (called "Robinson" in the book, 10 kills, and Horace Gilbert Wanklyn Debenham ("Debenham" in the book, six enemy aircraft destroyed). Yeates' Flight Commander "Mac" is based on the Canadian ace Donald MacLaren (48 kills and six balloons shot down), who served in 46 Squadron at the time. Other characters are clearly identifiable, although their names have been changed, like the insanely courageous Major Beal, and the short-lived squadron C.O. who accused Tom Cundall (Yeates) of cowardice in the air.

The title, Winged Victory, was not V. He had originally gone out to France in 1914, but had been sent home when official censorship of the press was introduced. By 1915 he was back on the Western Front, along with four other official war correspondents, his work appearing in the Daily Telegraph and Daily Chronicle. Gibb’s was forced to put up with this, although unhappy with the arrangement. A massive, large-format, volume (weighing around 3kg), this is an operational manual which includes details of virtually every military, industrial and strategic target in Germany. Divided into alphabetically arranged sections, the entries include operational numbers, locations, target names, areas, and Air Ministry codes for every target. Targets covered include oil refineries, power stations, dams, chemical works, munitions and explosives factories, naval armaments, naval bases, army bases, airfields, aircraft factories, mines, steel works, railways, and everything else that could be relevant to the German war effort. (For some unknown reason the introductory page has the word 'German' crossed out in pencil and replaced with 'Italy', but all the information in the manual relates solely to German targets, with no further mentions of Italy anywhere in the text).

A distribution list at the front of the manual shows that it had a very restricted circulation, with a maximum of only 300 copies being produced. It was intended for the use of soldiers being posted to, or already serving with, the army in India. This rare 1918 edition is full of fascinating information about the land and people of India, local customs, religion and general advice about military life in India during the First World War. There are sections on the frontiers of India, the army in India, the Indian Soldier, the fighting Classes, the Religions of India, the people of India, climate, shooting and hunting, health and how to behave in and outside camp. This map would have been used both by troops on the way to the front line and RFC pilots and observers. This is sheet 36B S.E., showing the area around Carency, which is is 8 miles North West of Arras and was heavily damaged during WW1.

Carency is often associated with the landmine warfare that marked the first few months of 1915. Making little progress in the capture of the village, the French Army decided in December 1914 to engage in an underground war in the hope that it would push the Germans back. They started tunnelling across the front line to place powerful explosive mines under the enemy's positions. This turned into a war of attrition with both armies using mines to devastating effect. The village was eventually recaptured, albeit in ruins, from the Germans on 9 May 1915 during a vast French offensive.

Ablain-Saint-Nazaire, lying at the foot of Lorette Hill, was occupied early in the war, in October 1914. The Germans fortified and successfully defended the village until it was permanently retaken by the French Army in May 1915.

In the aftermath of the war Ablain-Saint-Nazaire was little more than a field of rubble but reconstruction was swift and complete by 1924. The new church and the new town hall are enduring examples of the reconstruction works which, for the most part, were financed by German reparations. The largest French Military Cemetery in the world is situated nearby: the remains of nearly 40,000 soldiers are interred here.

Notre Dame de Lorette: also known as Ablain St.-Nazaire French Military Cemetery, is the world's largest French military cemetery. It is the name of a ridge, basilica, and French national cemetery northwest of Arras at the village of Ablain-Saint-Nazaire. The high point of the hump-backed ridge stands 165 metres high and – with Vimy Ridge – utterly dominates the otherwise flat Douai plain and the town of Arras. The ground was strategically important during the First World War and was bitterly contested in a series of long and bloody engagements between the opposing French and German armies. It was the focal point of three battles between 1914 - 1915.

Condition:

In good condition. Tanks 1914-1918 is full of fascinating details of tank invention, design, production and use in combat during WW1. The book is well illustrated with photographic plates and line drawings.

SIR ALBERT STERN (1878–1966) was a banker who became the Secretary of the Landships Committee during World War I, where his organisational ability and influence in financial circles assisted the Committee in creating the first British tank. During the war he came into conflict with the War Office but had the advantage of direct access to the Prime Minister, and no civil service career to protect. He was removed from direct involvement in the production of tanks and sidelined. At the outbreak of the First World War he tried to join the armed forces but experienced difficulty doing so due to a weak ankle. He offered to supply the Admiralty with an armoured car at his own expense and was eventually commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve at the end of 1914, when he joined the Armoured Car Division of the Royal Naval Air Service. Stern originally became involved with ‘Landships’, as Tanks were originally known, as an assistant to Flight Commander Thomas Hetherington, RNAS. In 1915 he became Secretary of the Landships Committee, and in February 1916 Lloyd George appointed him head of what was to become known as the Mechanical Warfare Supply Department, under the Ministry of Munitions, which controlled the procurement and supply of tanks. Stern was transferred to the Army where he eventually attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Stern believed in the application of business methods to war production with the minimum of interference from professional soldiers. Stern and his ally on the committee Eustace d'Eyncourt (Director of Naval Construction and designer of many of the Royal Navy's latest ships) attempted to use their influence with Lloyd George to influence the employment of tanks. However, neither had a military background nor had they spent much time on the frontline, and GHQ became irritated at their interference in their affairs. Stern was removed from his post and given the task of co-ordinating an Allied tank, which resulted in the Tank Mark VIII a few of which were built towards the end of the war.

Condition:

In very good condition.
