DIRECTOR OF MILITARY INTELLIGENCE,
THE WAR OFFICE
M.I. 10, THE WAR OFFICE, London, 1947
An extremely rare, original, WW2 M.I. 10 (Military Intelligence 10) War Office Intelligence manual, produced by M.I. 10 for the office of the Director of Military Intelligence and distributed in 1947. This is one of the very few documents that can be directly attributed to M.I. 10, the shadowy British wartime intelligence department that specialised in enemy weapons. Unlike the celebrated M.I.5 and M.I.6, very little is known about M.I. 10 other than that it was involved in the technical analysis of weapons. After WW2 it was merged into M.I.6.
The foreword to this volume states that: ‘For any recipient officially requiring fuller information on any particular subject, the records available can be consulted through M.I.10, the War Office, up to the end of 1947. Therafter they will be disposed of.’ Very few copies were produced, and hardly any will have survived outside the major museum collections.
Covering the Mines, Mine Detectors, and Demolition Equipment of the German Army from 1939-1945, this is a massive, large-format, volume (weighing 2kg), which was issued in very small numbers soon after the end of the Second World War. This was the fifth volume in a series which covered all the weapons of the German Army in WW2 (other volumes dealt with artillery, infantry weapons, non-AFV vehicles, and Armoured Fighting Vehicles).
This volume includes a great deal of information in the form of detailed descriptions and assessments of all the various explosive devices and their components, technical details, plans, diagrams, line drawings and photographs. There are numerous plates, illustrations and plans of German mines, igniters, demolition equipment, and mine detectors. Mines covered include: Tellermine, S-mine, Panzerstab, S-mine Hollow Charge, Time Delay Railway mine, Drifting mine, Icemine, Wooden Box mine, Riegelmine, Schumine, Glasmine, Topfmine, Magnetic Acoustic mine, Naval Magnetic, etc.
A fascinating and invaluable reference work on the mines and associated explosive equipment of the Third Reich during WW2, this is a very useful primary source for anyone researching both the Nazi military machine and the work of the British Intelligence Services.
