A Georgian or early Victorian mahogany cased compass, made around 1820-1840. This type of wood cased compass was produced from around the end of the 18th century to the mid-19th century. This example has a typically ornate Georgian style of compass card design. It also has the distinctive, delicate and finely balanced blued compass needle, with gilt North and South points. The compass is in good working order and finds North well. With a hand drawn paper card, flat blued needle, and 'crown' pivot. It would originally have had transit lock, operated by a small pin and lever when the lid is closed, but the lever has been removed at some time in the past.
Condition:
In very good condition, good working order, and just the normal signs of age and use. The wooden case has a very small crack at the edge of the lid near the left hand hinge, but this is quite stable and the hinge is secure. The glass, compass card and needle are all in very good condition. The compass finds North very well.
