BAYONET TRAINING
1916

Issued by the General Staff

H.M.S.O. / WAR OFFICE, London, 1916

'The bayonet is essentially a weapon of offence which must be used with skill and vigour; otherwise it has but little effect. To await passively an opportunity of using the bayonet entails defeat, since an approaching enemy will merely stand out of bayonet range and shoot down the defenders’.

The November 1916 edition of Bayonet Training, a British Army manual that would have been issued to officers and NCO's. It includes detailed advice on bayonet training for use in trench warfare, with sections on tactical use, assault, daily practice, ‘nursery' trenches, and all the various methods and techniques of attacking an opponent. The manual is illustrated with a series of plates and diagrams, showing the use of the bayonet and the layout of training areas and trenches.
