NOTES ON ENEMY
ARMY IDENTIFICATIONS:
GERMANY
M.I.3.B, War Office, London, August 1939
A very rare original WW2 British Intelligence manual, produced by M.I.3.B just before the outbreak of war in 1939, and printed in September 1939. M.I.3. (British Military Intelligence Section 3) was a division of the British Directorate of Military Intelligence, part of the War Office. It was originally set up during WW1 to handle geographical and other intelligence and information relating to European countries, with several different subsections. After WW1 the role of M.I.3. was changed to military intelligence in Europe, including the Baltic states, USSR and Scandinavia. M.I.3.B was the subsection responsible for Germany and Eastern Europe, under the command of Major David Talbot Rice. Its functions were absorbed into MI6 in 1945.
A restricted document with a limited circulation, Notes on Enemy Army Identifications includes recognition details of German Army tanks, AFVs and armoured cars, badges of rank, information on uniforms and insignia, and formation and unit flags. It was intended to aid in the identification of German regiments and other units, as well as highlighting the distinguishing features of enemy AFVs. The manual is well illustrated with colour plates and photographs.
