D'abord publié en 1852, cette nouvelle édition révisée fut publiée à titre posthume, après la mort de Nolan durant la Guerre de Crimée. Nolan participa à la Charge de la Brigade Légère à Balaclava le 25 octobre 1854. Après avoir délivré l'ordre d'avancer contre les canons russes, Nolan était en tête de la Brigade Légère lorsqu'il fut frappé à la poitrine par un éclat d'obus et tué. Il serait plus tard blâmé pour le malentendu entourant l'ordre de charger, et la controverse sur son rôle dans le désastre continue à ce jour. Nolan était un officier de cavalerie expérimenté – au sein des armées autrichienne et britannique – et un expert reconnu des chevaux et des tactiques de cavalerie. Les deux livres qu'il écrivit sur le sujet furent très influents à l'époque. Né d'un diplomate de second rang et de son épouse, Nolan fit ses études à l'école des pionniers autrichiens de Tulln, où il se distingua comme un cavalier enthousiaste et un théoricien militaire. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme plus tôt, il fut nommé sous-lieutenant au 10e régiment de hussards autrichiens, servant en Autriche, en Hongrie et à la frontière polonaise, où il devint à nouveau connu pour ses talents de cavalier et fut promu lieutenant principal. Nolan fut ensuite transféré à l'armée britannique comme cornette dans le 15e régiment de dragons légers. Déployé en Inde, Nolan fut finalement nommé maître d'équitation du régiment et aide de camp du général Berkeley, commandant en chef à Madras, l'accompagnant lors d'essais équestres pour évaluer l'utilisation de hongres plutôt que d'étalons comme montures de cavalerie, et fut promu capitaine en 1850. De retour en Grande-Bretagne en 1851, il fit une tournée en Europe continentale et écrivit deux livres sur l'équitation et la théorie de la cavalerie, \u003cem\u003eTraining of Cavalry Remount Horses\u003c\/em\u003e et \u003ci\u003eCavalry: Its History and Tactics\u003c\/i\u003e, qui fut universellement acclamé et conduisit à l'adoption d'une selle conçue par Nolan par l'armée britannique. Voix de confiance en matière de cavalerie, Nolan fut envoyé au Moyen-Orient au début de la guerre de Crimée pour chercher des montures appropriées. Après son retour, il fut attaché à l'état-major du général Richard Airey, et dans ce rôle, il délivra l'ordre qui conduisit à la charge de la Brigade légère. Quarante pour cent des soldats de la Brigade légère furent tués, blessés, capturés ou rendus inaptes au service, y compris Nolan, qui fut la première victime de la charge.
