HOW TO USE A RIFLE OR PISTOL

Written and Illustrated by
The Staff of 'The Regiment'

TEMPLE PRESS Ltd, London, c.1914

'Half a million men are enlisting as fast as the recruiting staff can enrol them. These war-recruits have now to begin to learn what a rifle is, and how to load and fire it, before they can bring any influence to bear on the military situation.'

A rare WW1 British Army Lee Enfield Service rifle shooting handbook, written by the staff of The Regiment magazine. Undated, but published c.1914, very soon after the start of the First World war. The preface talks about ‘the present crisis’ in which ‘half a million men are enlisting as fast as the Recruiting Staff can enrol them’. The book covers the use and maintenance of the .303 Lee Enfield MK III SMLE service rifle, including details of loading, firing, sighting, aiming, care and maintenance, firing positions, and the use of cover. There are also notes on map reading and brief details of the use of revolvers and automatic pistols such as the Webley, Colt, Browning and Savage. The book is illustrated with diagrams and line drawings.
