Victorian Pocket Barometer Altimeter c.1895

Victorian Pocket Barometer Altimeter c.1895

Price £145.00 Sale

A Victorian Pocket Barometer c.1895, with no maker’s or retailers’s marks. It has a brass case, silvered dial, and a rotating bezel. The first pocket barometers were made in the 1860s, and were used by explorers or travellers. The rotating bezel is calibrated to 10,000 ft, and it may well have been intended for use as an altimeter by mountaineers or balloonists. The design is typical of English pocket barometers from the last quarter of the 19th century. Working very well - it has been checked against Met Office local barometric pressure and the reading is accurate.

Condition:

In very good condition, and full working order. The barometer passes the plastic bag test and is reading accurately. The rotating bezel moves very smoothly. The brass case, bezel, glass, dial, and blued pointer are all in very good condition. There is some minor wear and a few marks to the brass case.
Dimensions: 48mm diameter, 15mm depth
