A rare British Army officers handbook on siege warfare, published in 1849. It includes a great deal of information on fortifications and the conduct of siege operations and is illustrated with line drawings and diagrams. Subjects covered include: principles of fortification, general outline of siege operations, object of different types of fortification, ordnance and ammunition, working parties, trenches, shelters, reconnaissance, artillery, musketry, use of men and tools, construction of parallels and approaches, construction of batteries, saps, sappers, breaching and counter-batteries, assaults, storming the breach, etc. The book is signed on the title page by 'C. A. Wynne, Xmas 1858'. There is also a decorative bookplate of Charles Arthur Wynne Finch, dated 1878.

Lt-Colonel Charles Arthur Wynne Finch (1841-1903) was born on 6 April 1841. He was the son of Charles Griffiths Wynne-Finch and Laura Susan Pollen. He died on 4 December 1903 aged 62. He served as an Ensign in the Scots Fusilier Guards and was promoted to Captain In November 1864. He went on to become a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Scots Guards, leaving the army in 1874. His other appointments included Justice of the Peace for Caernarvonshire, Justice of the Peace for Denbighshire, and Deputy Lieutenant of Caernarvonshire. He lived in a substantial country house at the family estate at Voelas, Denbighshire, Wales.


Condition:

In good condition. The boards are in good condition, with general signs of wear and use. The binding and hinges are good and secure. The text and illustrations are in very good condition. The book is signed on the title page by 'C. A. Wynne, Xmas 1858'. There is also a decorative bookplate of Charles Arthur Wynne Finch, dated 1878.
